Option "Section Européenne" en Anglais

Depuis la rentrée 2008, une section européenne en anglais a été mise en place dans notre établissement. Cette section accueille des élèves de 4ème et de 3ème motivés par l’anglais et qui souhaitent approfondir leurs connaissances dans cette discipline, tant dans le domaine linguistique que culturel, lors de deux heures de cours supplémentaires dans la semaine. Il s’agit d’apprendre à mieux connaître nos voisins britanniques mais également de partir à la découverte d’horizons plus lointains. En effet, les troisièmes du collège peuvent participer à l'échange avec les Etats-Unis au cours duquel ils sont en immersion totale dans une famille américaine.

From poetry to ITC

Découvrez les illustrations colorées et originales que les élèves de la section européenne ont réalisées, en salle multi-média, après avoir étudié le poème Orange Juice de Michael Rosen.

First, we studied the poem Orange Juice by Michael Rosen, the English children’s poet laureate. In the poem, a young narrator wonders how to get revenge on the thief who keeps stealing the orange juice left on his doorstep by the milkman.

Then, we created word clouds using keywords from the poem. Discover our colourful and original creations !

Echange avec l'auteur Louise Cooper

Après avoir lu “Emergency Landing”, une nouvelle de l’auteur britannique Louise Cooper, les élèves de la section européenne lui ont envoyé un message. Elle leur a répondu : voici leur premier échange.

Dear Louise,

First we want to wish you a very Happy New Year!
We are a group of French pupils. We're 13. Our school is called Collège Jean 23 and it is in Mulhouse, a town near the Swiss and German borders.
We've just read Emergency Landing. Some of us are not too keen on science fiction but we all liked your story, especially the twist at the end. We were so surprised to discover that the passengers were extraterrestrials.We would like to know what happened after the landing because obviously they didn't blow up the Earth!

Do you have other stories that are not too long and not too difficult to understand?

My French isn't as good as your excellent English, I'm afraid, so I'd better switch to English now... :-)

I'm delighted that you enjoyed Emergency Landing, but you've made me think, because - to be honest - I didn't decide what would happen after the landing! As you say, of course they didn't blow up the Earth. So what did happen...? One idea I've thought of is that, perhaps, the alien ship is extremely small. So they land, make their repairs, set their bomb and take off again. The bomb explodes... but with no more power than a small firework!
Do you have any other ideas of what might happen? If so, I'd love to hear them!

Yes, I have a lot more very short stories similar to Emergency Landing - two books of them, in fact! The titles are "Short and Scary" and "Short and Spooky", and they are published in the UK by Oxford University Press. If your class, or your teachers, would like to get copies, you should be able to order them by giving the ISBN number (a unique number that enables them to be tracked by a bookseller). The numbers are: Short and Scary! - ISBN 0-19-278190-1 ; Short and Spooky! - ISBN 0-19-275412-2. I hope that helps!

And (of course, authors can't resist giving themselves a promotion whenever they can!) I have a number of books published in French. There's a series of supernatural animal stories, titles, "Creatures", published by Editions J'ai Lu, two fantasy trilogies, "Le Maitre du Temps" and "La Porte du Chaos", published by Bragelonne, and a separate fantasy novel, "Notre Reine des Neiges", published by Nestiveqnen. If you have a chance to read any of them I hope you will enjoy them too!

I'm going to the "Trolls et Legendes" fantasy festival in Mons (Belgie) in April - I'm very excited about that!

From Martin Luther King to Barack Obama  

Each year, on the third Monday of January, Americans commemorate the life of Martin Luther King Junior.

He was born on January 15^th, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He became a pastor like his father and grandfather.He was 26 years old when « the Rosa Parks incident » happened ( Rosa Parks was arrested because she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man). Martin Luther King decided to do something to make the world a better and fairer place. He organized boycotts, marches, demonstrations and sit-ins. He received the Nobel Peace prize in 1964. Martin Luther King delivered his most famous speech « I have a dream » in Washington D.C. On August 28^th 1964. He was assassinated on April 4^th 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Thanks to Martin Luther King, the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. It made it illegal to treat people differently because of the color of their skin.

This year, Martin Luther King Day falls on January 19^th, the day before Inauguration Day!A coincidence that shows how much America has changed in less than 50 years.

On January 20^th,at noon, Barack Obama will take the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, DC, He will become the 44^th American President and the first black President.
